Dead Of Eve, Pam Godwin

BLURB--A virus devastates humanity. Few men survive. The rest are monsters. The women are dead, except Evie. Through a quirk in her genetics, she survives. When her physiology begins to evolve, she must come to terms with what she is and accept her role in finding a cure.

The mutated hunt her. The men brutalize her…except three. Cryptic warrior, contrite lover, caring enemy; they are fiercely protective of the last living woman, but divided in their own agendas. Can they come together to protect the only hope for humanity?

Evie must survive.

Dead of Eve…..huh, just finished it and I have been itching to write my review for days now. I just….I don’t have words.
One massive point that needs to be made straight away is that this is not a straight up horror read, many people who will love this book will pass it up with the belief that it isn't for them because of the horror and gore. Please don't think that! This book is a deep, emotional and intelligent read, I would urge you to take a chance on it.

If you want a fluffy easy read or are easily offended move along right now, It's brilliant.

For me the beauty of the book isn't even in the story, its in the characters and the emotion of the book. There are many interesting characters to love and hate….or both…or change your mind about….seriously there is no solid ground at all.

I don’t know where to start, this book is so special because of Evie. I don’t think I have ever come across a woman like Evie. If you have read any of my other reviews you will see that I love people watching and analysing characters more than story. Evie is the ultimate character. The way she is written!! Good lord the way she is written…..She is written so completely that I feel like I know who Evie was before all the horror that took over her life but I’m just meeting her now. I feel like she was a funny and very emotional woman, her personality is all there underneath a layer of fight and being tunnel-vision due to what’s going on right now. I love how she is such an open book. The woman can’t hide anything. This endears her to the men she encounters, she is feisty but feminine. Sometimes emotions can make a person look weak, not our little Evie.

The writing is just awesome in the most literal sense. AWE.SOME. The tools used to push the story forward are just genius. Evie has visions/dreams which give her purpose and her next movement to push the story along but at the same time as these visions contain her children who she lost after the outbreak this keeps the trauma fresh and allows you to constantly feel her pain whilst understanding her need to continue without losing any of the strength of character. I’ll stop with the Evie love-fest now….because believe me, I could continue.

Special mention- Little stunt pulled with Roark at around 60% I NEARLY FELL OUT WITH YOU PAM GODWIN. I love Roark, I want one....and a Jesse....and a Michio. Mmmm

Only thing that bugged me but then I changed my mind about as the story progressed was that there was a slight sense of vilification of Muslims, I would liked to have seen maybe Michio defend Allah and have the Drone be the bad guy on his own so it wasn’t the religion as a whole but then I realised that it sooo wasn't remotely intended as being anti-Muslim it was necessary to prove a point about politics and religion being responsible for lots of negativity in the world. The story wouldn't have been so well rounded had man not been responsible for the outbreak, so yeah I completely get it now.

All in all this is one of my favourite books of all time, seriously it’s just amazing. Nobody is safe, I had no clue where it was going and was constantly surprised. I loved each and every character. They are all wildly different, complex yet complete and stay true to who they are.
I was exhausted reading it and by the end I was fucking catatonic my brain just melted, as I was reading and feeling all of this heavy emotion my brain was screaming HOW DID WE GET HERE?!?!?! WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN?!?!?. If you’re a fan of horror, super strong females, sex, sci-fi, hell even if your not it's written so beautifully- yes that is the best word for this zombie gore fest- beautiful, just try it.
Number 2 now please and thank you.

I need to stop by here often. We've read three books in common. I too read Heat.
